New World

I was just going through an old journal from 2001 and came across a poem I wrote. It seemed appropriate to share

New World 9-11-01

I wondered, at first, if I was dreaming.
It certainly didn’t seem like anything real.
The world I’ve known, been raised in, is gone
And my heart is too numb to feel.
As I realize this isn’t a nightmare
But I am only just now waking
From the dream which kept me from knowing
what they could be taking
Now, I’m wide awake,
Awake and fully aware
And now, for the first time
I know what it is to be scared.
Gone, the mirage of security,
Shattered the glass walls which surround
As we, a whole nation of people
Are sent tumbling to the ground.
Yet, though we may fall, again
Again we will rise to be righted
For we are one nation, together
In our differences, united
